While playing online in a 3 player Jackpot, winner take all tournament on America's Card Room, Mike had this happen:

    Sakes almighty
    second hand of jackpot
    I'm in SB with AA
    button goes all in.
    I call.
    He has 8 2 !!!
    Flop is 10 6 4
    then 2
    then 2
    I'm out

Good thing it didn't happen live at the 8-2 club, that guy would have won an 8-2 Jackpot $25 chip too. :)

  • 21 Sep 2004:

I don't think this is an especially unusual bad beat (we've seen it quite a number of times), but Kevin whined for me to put it here, so here goes, in Kevin's words:

The game is 2-4 Hold'Em. I'm dealt pocket Queens, and there is much raising and re-reraising by myself, Dave Taylor, and Spencer. Finally the insanity ends, and we three have put in $12 each pre-flop. The flop shows Qxx (two hearts) I cry out "Well looks like I'm winning this one!". Dave and I bet and call, (there might have been a raise in there as well; i can't remember), but Spencer drops out. The turn shows a Jack of Hearts, and now I'm worried Dave might have AK suited in hearts. I bet and he just calls. Well, the river doesn't pair the board, but it's another heart. I check and Dave bets with a smirking grin. Grrrrrrrr. I call to see his pocket Aces, one of which is a Heart. oh the pain. (Spencer had pocket Jacks, by the way). oh well, the river was especially cruel to everyone tonight.

  • 23 Mar 2004:

The game is 7 with a Twist. Cary is dealt a pair of Queens in the hole, and a one-eyed Jack up, giving him three Queens from the start. He raises $5 when the action comes to him, and everyone folds around to Mike, who is holding a Nine and a wild Jack in the hole, and a Jack up. Mike raises $5 to get the rest of the players out. Cary calls the $5 raise, so it's heads up. Cary is dealt a Four up, and pays the $3 to get another upcard, which is a Six. Mike is dealt a Nine. Cary bets $5 and Mike calls. Next Cary is dealt another Four up, and again pays $3 to get another upcard, which is another Four up, so of course he pays another $3 to get another upcard, which is yet another Four! So at this point, Cary has five Fours. Since he can't possibly lose now, he decides not to pay another $3 for yet another upcard. Mike is then dealt another Nine, giving him four Nines. So here's what he have at this point:

       Cary:  (Q)(Q) Wild 4 6 4 4 4  (Five of a Kind Fours)
       Mike:  (Wild)(9) J 9 9  (Four of a Kind Nines)

Of course Cary bets $5, as he's obviously got it locked up. Mike thinks about it, eyeing his four Nines. He knows he has a chance to beat Cary, albeit a very small one. Already slightly on tilt from earlier (down $80 in 30 mins), he decides to try to draw out, and calls the $5. Two more cards to come. Cary is dealt a K, and Mike gets a Queen...no help. Cary throws out a red chip, and Mike thinks about it. It will cost only $10 more (with a huge pot already in the middle) to see two more cards, and he wants to draw out on Cary very badly. So he calls the $5. Last card is down. Cary of course bets his $5, and Mike raises! Cary nearly jumps out of his seat, screaming "No fucking way!!!" He looks at his last card, sees an inconsequential Six, and slams down a $5 chip, calling the raise. Mike turns over 5 Nines and drags the pot. Hysteria ensues. Cary is deflated. Of course, one can't help but notice that Cary would have gotten Mike's third (and fourth) Nine if he had bought another upcard after his fourth Four. :-)

  • 8 Oct 2002:

We played Hybrid many times tonight, and Mike suffered a bad beat: he lost with 4 of a kind! Mike was dealt 66xxx, drew three cards, and ended up with 666J3. Graham was dealt QQxxx, drew three cards, and ended up with QQQK7. Both players got a blank on 6th street, and then Mike was dealt another 6 on the river. The pot was raised and reraised several times, until Mike finally called, and Graham turned over his four Queens and took the $130 pot.

  • 24 Sep 2002:

The game is Equal Opportunity Red-Black-Push with a Twist, and after six cards the pot is monstrous and Chris holds:

    (8h)(2d) Qs 8d 2c 3c
giving him a score of +3. There is only one card that can help him: a black three (and he already has one of them!) He gets dealt his last card, and at this point he really doesn't know what he needs (he had passed on a 6). Graham bets, Dave Calls, and Chris screams "RAISE IT UP!" with a shit-eating grin on his face. He had gotten the magical card: the three of spades. He took the whole pot.

  • 27 Aug 2002:

We had a pretty big pot for a regular old Straight Seven Card Stud game:
         Dave: (9 A) 9 9 x x A
Greg: (Jd 9d) Kd Qd Qh 8d x
         Kevin: (Kh Jh) 10h 3h x 9s Qc
Dave's full house beat Greg's flush and Kevin's straight, so he took the $130 pot.

  • 20 Aug 2002:

Chris pulled a natural Royal Flush in Omaha! He held Ac Qc x x and the board was Jc 10c x / Kc / As. Chris bet it when it made it on the turn, and everyone folded.

  • 18 Jun 2002: (by Mike/Kevin)

We were playing Suffecool, and Kirk ended up with the most spectacular hand to scoop the pot: (2 6) 3 K K K (K). He kept the Trey, and the first two Kings. Then Graham thought long and hard, and finally passed Kirk his third King. And finally, as miracles would have it, Kirk was dealt the fourth King on the river.

  • 26 Mar 2002: (by Doug)

Pass The Trash - The game starts off with some early betting of $1, and a raise to $2 by Graham. Everyone still in calls. Second up card and Greg is showing 2 Queens. Graham shows low straight flush. Cary is showing xT. Chris is showing low straight flush. Mike has x8. Average betting proceeds on these cards. 3rd up card, Greg has 3 Queens, Graham A23c, Cary xTT, Chris 236d, Mike x88. Betting proceeds with $5 from Greg, raise by Graham, Reraise by Cary, call by Chris, call by Mike, Greg calls, much reraising around to Greg, who folds his Queens to possible straight flushes or 4 of a kinds, contributing his $15. Eventually everyone remaining has $40 sitting in front of them after Chris froze it! Graham turns his fourth up card to definite low potential, Cary now shows xTTT, Chris looks low now (?) as well, and Mike now has x888. Betting lands all with $25 in front of all. Declare, Mike and Cary for high, Graham and Chris low. Result: Mike's 4 eights lose to Cary's 4 tens, Graham scoops low with perfect. $311 TOTAL pot!!

  • 19 Dec 2001:

The game was Suffecool. Remember that twos are wild for high hands. Here's the hand that Kevin ended up with. Too bad there's no such thing as six-of-a-kind! :-)

  • 28 Aug 2001: (by Kevin)

We were playing a game of Omaha, where you can only use two of your four hole cards, Graham deals himself four natural Aces [see photo].

  • 28 Aug 2001: (by Kevin)

The game was Hold'Em. It came down to just Dennis and Cary, with a board of 4h 4c 5h 6h 4d. They start a raising war, and finally Dennis thinks long and hard, turns over his 4s and calls. Cary flips overs his 2h 3h. Gee, and I thought Four-of-a-Kind was a good hand.

  • 14 Aug 2001: (by Kevin)

We're playing Hold'Em. Kevin's in late position with Jd 10d, and decides to raise to limit the field. All fold but Mike and Kirk. The flop comes: Ah 9d Kd Schweeet!! Kev's got a diamond flush draw, and a Queen on the board gives him Broadway. Mike and Kev get into a raising war, and Kirk stays with us. The turn shows a most wonderful Qc. Kev bets, Mike raises, Kev re-reraises!!! Kirk and Mike both call. Even tho Cactus has broadway, he's chanting Diamond! Diamond! Diamond!! Well, the river brings a sweet Ad, so Kev can't get the four bucks out fast enough. Mike calls, and Kirk folds. Cactus turn over his lovely broadway/flush, and Mike dejectedly turns over his "two pair" that he had flopped from the start: As Kh -- "Aw, too bad", says Kev, and just at the moment he starts to reach for the chips, somebody notices that the river Ace gives Mike a Full House. "Huh?", says Mike. "WHAT!!??" screams Cactus. Oh, the horror. the horror. That was around a $60 pot.

  • 27 Mar 2001: (by Kevin)

    Game: 7 With a Twist

Kevin is dealt (99)Wild, and his only caller is Chris, who is also showing a wild card. Kevin gets a Qs and Ks, followed by another wild card. There has been betting and calling of five dollars each time. After seventh street, Chris bets and Kevin just calls. Chris turns over a low Straight Flush, and Kevin is sad that his four Nines are going to lose, when it suddenly dawns on him that one of his pocket Nines is the Nine of Spades. Gee, that's a higher Straight Flush. Oops.

  • 13 Mar 2001: (by Kevin and Doug)

    Game: Suffestud

At the substitution round, Mike bought a replacement card down for two bucks, and he's showing (??)224. He had pitched a Trey, so it looks like he's not going low. Graham does not substitute, and he is the sole low (with a Jack showing; talk about abusing the system). Doug replaces an upcard up and gets a rag, so he's now showing (?)A8Ax. Doug bets out his Aces with $5, Mike raises, Graham reraises, Doug reraises to test Mike's apparent trips, Mike reraises (oops), Graham reraises, then Doug finally gets a clue and calls to see amazing grace. With each in for $30 on that round alone, it's a huge pot (+$150)! Both Mike and Doug declare high, and Graham skates low. Doug shows his third Ace, but Mike turns over a ...drum roll, please... Full House (44422). At least one (Graham says two) of Mike's cards to make that hand had been folded! That was one heck of a substitution.

  • 13 Feb 2001:

    Game: 42nd Street

The first three card are flopped: 9h 7h 5h. Some light betting. The 5c is turned over, and immediately there is a lot of heavy betting. Finally the board shows:

                                 Kh 7h
                             Ks 9h 5h 5c
Lot more heavy betting, and the three remaining players (Doug, Art, and Ron) declare high. Both Ron and Art show a 57 for Fives Full, but Doug turns over his 6h8h for the Straight Flush, which he's had since the original flop! Ouch. Doug scooped the $142 pot.

  • 13 Feb 2001:

Game: Pass the Trash (of course)

    Showing was:

         Chris: 6s 4h
         Kevin: Ac 2d
         Mike: K K
Everyone else has folded. Mike thinks he's in the driver's seat with the only high and starts what ends up being a LOT of betting and raising, and finally Chris folds. (We don't know it, but Chris has two more sixes hidden, so he is trying to decide whether or not Kevin has the case six or not, therefore whether he should try to bluff Kevin out of his [in Chris' opinion] not-perfect low). Mike turns over a Queen, and Kevin turns over another Ace. Chris is not happy :/ And neither is Mike, because he's no longer sitting pretty. Next, Mike turns over another Queen, but Kevin turns over another Ace! A2AA vs. KKQQ. Kevin is praying that Mike has a King or Queen in the hole and will declare high. As it turns out, Mike was bluffing with KKQQJ so he knows he will win low automatically, as Kevin at worst has trip Aces. Kevin declares high and Mike low. Kevin turns over the fourth Ace for Quad Aces.

  • 30 Jan 2001: (by Kevin)

    Game: Suffecool

         Dennis: four natural Aces
         Mike: K 2 4d 5d 6d 5h 2
Chris: 96 low, but with scary upcards

Dennis and Mike both declared High, and Chris declared Low. Mike was considering going pig, with his 6542K low, but Chris' upcards were scary enough to prevent it. Mike wins high with his small Straight Flush, and Chris skates with his "sucky low" (his words). I guess Four Aces just aren't worth what they used to be :)

  • 30 Jan 2001: (by Kevin)

    Game: Follow the Queen

After the field was thinned, it came down to just Mike and Ron S. Deuces and Queens are wild, and after sixth street, there is some hefty betting. They both get a miracle card on seventh street, and there are raises galore.

    RonS: Ad 2 2 4d 5d As x 5-high Straight Flush (also Four Aces)
    Mike: 3s 2 5s 6s Q x x 7-high Straight Flush

  • 30 Jan 2001: (by Kevin)

The game was Pass The Trash and I'm showing As Ks Qs 10s, and Mike is showing 10c 10d Jc Jh. after a bunch of raising, I fold my bogus Royal Flush. Mike flashes his hole card -- the Js. Guess I couldn't bluff him with him hiding THAT card :/

  • 16 Jan 2001:

The game was Texas Hold'em. Mike held AK offsuit, Chris held K9 offsuit, and Kevin held 10 10. Mike raised the bet, and everyone called. The flop was Kd 10h Qs. Mike bet, Kevin raised his trip 10's, and everyone called. The turn was the Jack of Spades, giving Mike the Ace-high straight and Chris the King-high straight. Much betting ensued, and the river was the Ace of Clubs, giving everyone an Ace-high straight! So everyone played the board and there was a three-way split.

  • 16 Jan 2001: (by Kevin)

The game was Suffecool. All the more ironic. :/
After sixth street, there were four players:

    Mike: 3 A 2 6
    Doug: A 3 5 10
    RonS: 8c 7c K 6d
    Kev: Q 3 3 Q

Well, I had another Queen in the hole, so my Full House was already made. Ron had kept the 7c when passed to him, so we all put him on a Straight Flush draw. I checked, knowing Mike would bet. Mike bet, Doug and Ron called, I check-raised, Mike re-raised, Doug threw in the towel, Ron called. I thought for a while, and decided that I was going to make Ron pay bigtime to get that last down card for his Straight Flush. I raised again, and Mike raised again. Ron struggled to figure out what to do. He showed his hand to Doug (which I later got angry about, but then apologized), and finally decided to call and freeze the betting. Well, everybody gets his down card and Doug asks to see Ron's next card before Ron got it (since it would have been his). When he slides Ron his card, he says something like "You're not going to believe this." Anyway, on Seventh street, I check, Mike bets, and Ron raises. Ugh. Is he bluffing?? Maybe he's going low after all and got a magic card to give him the perfect low (remember, the King is wild for low). I decide to call. Mike re-raises (of course), and Ron re-raises. Ouch. Somebody call the waaaaambulance. I call and freeze it. Ron and I both declare high. Ron is worried I have five Queens. Hah!!! Fat chance. Ron got the magical 9c on the river to go with his Jc and wild 2 pocket cards for his Jack-high straight flush. It's a $180 pot split between Mike and Ron. I'm on tilt and think about leaving the table, but I buy in (again) and eventually work my way back to being down $49 for the night. Woo hoo. I'm digging a hole early for 2001.

  • 12 Dec 2000:

The game was Texas Hold'em. Chris was dealt AA, Mike was dealt QT, and Cary was dealt a pair, I believe. Everyone else dropped on a pre-flop bet from Chris. The flop was A K 10, giving Chris a set and Mike an inside straight draw. Chris bet, and Cary and Mike called. The turn brought the Jack that Mike needed. Chris bet, Mike raised, and Cary folded. Chris called my raise. The river was a blank. There was much raising and reraising between Chris and Mike until Chris finally called. Chris was not happy when his trip Aces lost to Mike's straight. Mike raked in the $85 pot.

  • 7 Nov 2000:

We're playing single blind 1-2 Omaha. The flop is 883. Kevin has 83xx in his hand, giving him the Full House. RonS, Dennis, and Kevin raise about six times. Next card is a Nine. Still no low. Much raising again. Last card is a Five. Okay, now there's a low. Much raising. RonS wins low when the Five hit (neither Dennis or Kevin have low potential), and the Five also gives Dennis a higher Full House (he has 85xx), beating Kevin's 88833. Kevin was not happy about that Five. :/

  • 17 Oct 2000:

This was a game I missed because I was out of the game early this night, but the game was Texas Hold'em. Dennis had QsKs in the hole. The flop brings Js 10s X. The turn brings a blank, but the river brings the As, giving Dennis the Royal Flush! He pulled down a bunch of money from someone, perhaps Ron W., who was betting the flush.

  • 17 Oct 2000: (by Kevin)

The game was Follow The Queen, regular rules, called by Doug. After the second betting round, it was down to three players: Doug, Ron, and Mike. Queens were wild, as were Eights. There was much betting of blue ($5) chips, up until everyone's final up card was revealed. Here were the hands:

    Ron: A A Q X - three Aces showing
    Mike: K Q 8 J - three Kings showing
    Doug: 8h 9h Jh X - three to a Straight Flush showing

Somebody bet $5, and everyone called. Perhaps there was a raise here; note sure. After the final downcard, Ron is high showing and bets five. Mike shows me his cards. He's got a Queen and an Eight in the hole. Five Kings. DAMN! He's raising! Doug ponders. And ponders. He shows his hand to Dennis asking what he thinks. Dennis looks and says something like "what do you have to think about?" Doug looks at his hand again, and by Dennis' magical poker vision, has transformed Doug's hand into another raising hand. Ron raises as well, and I'm scratching my head thinking "Ron is going to lose on Four Aces." Mike decides to just call, and Doug calls as well. The final hands?

    Doug: Queen high straight flush
    Mike: five Kings
Ron: five Aces (Ace Ace Ace Ace Queen)
Ron raked in his $124 pot.
