ATLARGE 2001 - Trip Report - Doug
My report is very uninteresting, as I really wasn't into it. I hate feeling sick, and even though the Trop poker room is smoke free, it's not a conducive environment for those feeling under the weather.
I probably played ring games for about 4 hours there, and that was enough to get me -$20.
Hold'em tourney was new to me as I didn't do it last year. I think I was 13th to bust out, thanks to being at a table with the eventual winner and three other pretty strong players. I went all in on a pair of 9's and had a chance for a flush on the turn and river and house on the river. Instead, the other guy got 2 J's to match his one J for a set and none of my stuff materialized. Interesting note: our table had knocked out 4 players prior to my own demise, which speaks for the action there.
I was fourth to bust out in the stud tourney thanks to Cactus Kev, ADB Bigboy, my own eternal optimism in pulling out an AKJ insider, and losing to Bigboy's suck out straight to beat my set of 5's! Ultimately, Dennis had the honor of capping my hopes. I arrived at Dennis' table with $20 in chips left, after our table was reseated. I tried one card, then folded. (Two more chances until I would be blinded to death) I then went all in on a pair of sevens, and Dennis pulled out a (Qxx)QQ22 to royally kick my butt. Really, I had no choice but to play that hand, since my $15 would have been eaten in the next hand by the bring-in (maybe for lesser cards). I think Dennis had a deal with the dealer prior to my arrival! ;)
I think I could have done better in the stud if there were actual players at our starting table. Instead, we had three dead stacks just contributing to blinds. Kevin liked it, but somehow it just seemed to me like a bum situation.
Glad everyone had fun. The best part for me was drinking beer last night at Hooters (even with my shitty seat!) and stumbling back to lose $40 at the tables. Also enjoyed having Breakfast at that Country Kitchen joint. Poker was secondary for me this time...
